Abstract

The study investigated military government and educational development:  A study of tertiary institutions development in South-South Region of Nigeria, 1967 – 1999.  The need for this study is to ensure continuous and effective educational policies that will enhance an effective manpower development towards achieving a sustainable economy for national development. Based on this, three research questions were formulated as a guide to the study.  Again, the study anchored on the functionalist theory, which was made prominent by scholars like; Augustine Comte, Herbert Spencer Emile Durkheim, and Talcott Parsons.  The study adopted a historical research design. Also, in-depth interviews were instrumental in the data collection. The data collected through the above-mentioned methods were thoroughly subjected to content analysis. The study found out that the military established many tertiary institutions in the South-South region of Nigeria. However, these institutions were poorly funded and had the problem of infrastructural development.  However, the study concluded and recommended that the civilian government should incorporate some effective educational policies of the military government and formulate workable educational policies for tertiary institutions to ensure robust development of the educational sector in Nigeria.
