Abstract

This study analyzes conditional clauses from a semantic perspective in Gabriel García Márquez's novel Chronicle of a Death Foretold. We present five categories of conditional clauses: potential, actual, exhortative, counterfactual, and argumentative. It is clear how each type aids in the development of the story and the expression of features like ambiguity, caution, rebuke, or moral justification by analyzing a few examples taken straight from the text. This work is based on textual analysis, linguistic theories, and specialized scientific references. Desde una perspectiva semántica, se lleva a cabo el análisis de las oraciones condicionales en la novela Crónica de una muerte anunciada, escrita por Gabriel García Márquez. Muestra cinco clases de oraciones condicionales: exhortativas, potenciales, argumentativas, contrafactuales y reales. Al mirar algunos ejemplos del texto, se muestra cómo cada tipo ayuda a crear la narrativa y a manifestar elementos como advertencia, ambigüedad, justificación moral o reprimenda. Este estudio se basa en teorías de la lingüística, citas científicas concretas y análisis textuales.
